What's Happening in 2006?
Saturday, 22 April 2006
Why has the Missourians for Safe Energy reconvened at this time? What event should Missourians be aware of? In short, the electric demand of our state is growing and so AmerenUE (our electricity provider) has announced it is considering meeting that demand with a nuclear power plant to be built beside the current nuclear plant in Callaway County. Several years ago that would have been unheard of, since nuclear power is a very expensive method of creating electricity. But recently passed congressional bills offer significant subsidies for nuclear power. These include up to $2 billion in payments for construction delays, even if the delays come from the licensing process or local objections. The bill also limits operator liability in the case of accidents, assumes costs related to waste disposal, offers no limit loans for 80% of construction costs, and a tax rebate for every megawatt produced. In total, the package makes nuclear power a feasible, but not optimal, choice for a utility company that already has access to a nuclear reactor site.

Welcome to Missourians for Safe Energy. Our website serves as an introduction to our group, a resource bank for the community, and as an information bank for further reading.

Missourians for Safe Energy (MSE) was founded in 1976 in response to two proposed nuclear reactors to be constructed in Callaway County. One reactor was abandoned and the other was irradiated in 1984. Now, in 2006, AmerenUE has made tentative claims that it will build a second nuclear reactor in Callaway County. Once again, Missourians for Safe Energy is ready to raise the dangers, costs, and commitments nuclear power entails.
